Know your employment rights and obligations under Virginia, Maryland, D.C Laws

AGE DISCRIMINATION

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (“ADEA”) forbids discrimination of individuals aged forty (40) years and older.

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES

The ADA covers employers with 15 or more employees, including state and local governments. It also applies to employment agencies and to labor organizations.

AT-WILL EMPLOYMENT

At-will means that an employer can terminate an employee at any time for any reason, except an illegal one, or for no reason without incurring legal liability.

FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT

The Wage and Hour Division (WHD) of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) administers and enforces the FLSA with respect to private employment.

FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT

The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) requires Companies with 50 or more employees to allow eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave within any 12 month period.

PREGNANCY DISCRIMINATION

If a woman is temporarily unable to perform her job due to a medical condition related to pregnancy or childbirth, the employer or other covered entity must treat her in the same way as it treats any other temporarily disabled employee.

TITLE VII

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a federal law that prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion.
