Client Alert for D.C. Employers: Updates to Universal Paid Leave Act (UPLA)

Client Alert for D.C. Employers: Updates to Universal Paid Leave Act (UPLA)

District of Columbia

Under the District of Columbia’s Universal Paid Leave Amendment Act of 2016 (UPLA) some changes to employee’s paid leave benefits are going to take effect in July 2020. Under UPLA, covered employees will receive paid time off for: (1) parental leave to bond with a new child (up to 8 weeks in a year); (2) family leave to care for a family member (up to 6 weeks in a year); and (3) medical leave for an employee’s own serious health condition (up to 2 weeks in a year).

UPLA also created a notice requirement for employers. Employers were required to provide notice of the new benefits to employees by February 1, 2020. The Department of Employment Services released the required Paid Family Leave Notice, available here, which must be posted in worksites, as well as provided to employees in electronic or physical form.

For guidance regarding how this legislation affects your business, contact the employment law experts at General Counsel, PC today at 703-991-7973.
