J. Max Barger, is the Chair of the Estate Planning and Probate Practice with General Counsel, PC. Mr. Barger's practice concentrates primarily on estate planning and wealth transfers for families and business owners, wealth preservation and protection, estate and trust administration, retirement plan distributions and estate, gift and fiduciary tax issues. Bringing a comprehensive and deep estate planning practice background, Max has worked with clients on tax strategies to minimize tax liabilities. He has practiced exclusively in the areas of estate and business succession planning and trust and probate estate administration since graduating from law school in 1995 from Regent University. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from Regent University concentrating primarily on finance and entrepreneurial development. He was an adjunct professor at Old Dominion University's Center for Global Business and Executive Education and the Regent University School of Law where he taught courses on Estate Planning and Taxation, and Wills, Trusts and Estates. Mr. Barger received his Bachelor's degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.Max has written a number of articles and has lectured on estate planning topics including the use of family limited partnerships, grantor retained trusts and charitable lead trusts, the marital deduction and the marital elective share, estate planning techniques for unmarried couples and designing an estate plan with your children in mind. Max is licensed by the Virginia Continuing Education Board to teach continuing education courses in Insurance, Financial and Estate Planning. He is a member of the McLean Estate Planning Council, the Virginia Bar Association Trusts and Estates Section, the Bar Association of Montgomery County Trusts and Estates Section and the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils. He is a member of the Virginia and Maryland State Bars.Mr. Barger currently is a board member of the Capital Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and is the volunteer coordinator for the Whitman-Walker Estate Planning Clinic and the Mautner Project Estate Planning Clinic. He serves as counsel to the Foundry United Methodist Church Planned Giving Ministry Team. He has also served on a number of charitable organization boards and committees including the Washington DC AIDS Walk, Co-Chair of the 2014 Gay Games Bid Ceremonies Committee, Host Committee for Whitman-Walker Clinic's Going the Extra Mile, and Heart Of America's Sweet Charity Ball.In the past, he was President of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Financial Planning Association. He chaired the Old Dominion University Estate Planning Conference and has served on the Board of the Tidewater Council of Boy Scouts of America and the Insurance Advisory Board at old Dominion University.
